The Bible discusses the idea of the kohen, which in English means “priest.” From one perspective, each of us is like a kohen because, as God’s people, we are all pure. I don’t mean “pure” in terms of not doing things that are terrible; we all do such things. That’s part of being alive. We say the wrong things, eat the wrong things, act the wrong way. God knows what we do or don’t do in the privacy of our own home! But all this doesn’t matter. What does matter is that each and every one of us has been infused with a spark of the Creator. Thus it is our job to act like a kohen: to be there for somebody who needs us, to extend ourselves in a moment of care, to be the wisdom for the friend who needs our help in the middle of the night. We are all God’s people, and we all have the capacity to share with those around us. |
