Saying Yes to the Universe

24th June 2012 – Jake – We're all a little weird.  And life is a little weird.  And when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall into mutually satisfying weirdness - and call it love - true love.

Love Them More

There’s an old saying: When a father complains that his son has taken to evil ways, what should he do? Love him more than ever.

Give more love, and less punishment, to the troubled people in your life.

I watched the movie Jonny English Reborn last night.  It would seem an unlikely source for spiritual inspiration but there it was; some really mind-blowing stuff.

You came here to forget your life of shame. But the path you must tread to new life will not be easy.

Our purpose here is simple; To strengthen what is weak; Make hard what is soft.

This will take time. Mind must be master of body. Strong mind can separate the body from its suffering.

You are not young, but with age comes wisdom.

When Mind is master of body you will be warrior once more.

Master, what is my destiny?

I’m in touch with a Higher Power.

Master, am I ready?

Open your heart and you shall be reborn!

Mind must be master of the body

Last night was also the final episode of the Bollywood talent show. There were some really juicy nuggets of inspiration in their meetings with the film director.

The first candidate was embarrassed growing up as a Sri Lankan.  When she met the director he told her : “Unveil...so the smile is gone and that’s the real you. That’s what’s under the mask.

The mask has gone. Why do you laugh so much? I notice you hide behind your smile. You use it as a shield to conceal yourself.

You feel that whatever you are is not good enough, so let me conceal myself.

Doesn’t it dispel a lot of energy? The mask has eaten into your face so you don’t know what is the mask and what is the face!

It takes a lot of energy to be somebody else. It takes no energy to be yourself at all.

What you are is perfect! You have tears running down your face, your mascara is all smudged and you don’t care how you look. That’s what makes you beautiful!

Lesson for Neytiri there!

He tells the next contestant whilst doing intense eye gazing :

Don’t hide. Reveal yourself. Don’t hide. Let those emotions come. Let them flow.

You came out like a dried up well, but look when you just dug in, there is so much there.

I really felt it and welled up with tears.  It was the closest I came to letting it flow. Hopefully it will happen when I do the eye gazing with Neytiri.

I have been looking for this all my life – connection.

It’s swept up something in you?

I exposed myself, free my fears and say things I never really tackled before. I feel freer, I feel so much freer.

All the hidden treasures you have discovered. I have no treasures to give you. All the treasure is already in you!

And finally the eventual winner was asked what she thought about the slums in Mumbai. What was the central image that still lingers?

Happiness – the Happiness that come from these people when they have nothing. They have nothing to live with, they have nothing to live for, but they do because they have family and they have more of a sense of what is real than anyone I ever met.

He asks her if she remembers a name from the slums. She replies Asha.

Asha means hope and that’s what Bollywood is – we are hope peddlers.

In the land of despair we build hope.

Man lives in Hope and dies in Hope!

Or as Neytiri said “We work all our lives and then we die!”

Saying Yes to the Universe - A Prophesy?
Making the Decision

Saying Yes to the universe opens the gate to receiving what your soul really wants.

The hardest thing about saying yes to the universe is that it means accepting everything life puts in front of us. Most of us have a habit of going through our days saying no to the things we don’t like and yes to the things we do, and yet, everything we encounter is our life. We may be afraid that if we say yes to the things we don’t like, we will be stuck with them forever, but really, it is only through acknowledging the existence of what’s not working for us that we can begin the process of change. So saying yes doesn’t mean indiscriminately accepting things that don’t work for us. It means conversing with the universe, and starting the conversation with a very powerful word—yes.

When we say yes to the universe, we enter into a state of trust that whatever our situation is, we can work with it. We express confidence in ourselves, and the universe, and we also express a willingness to learn from whatever comes our way, rather than running and hiding when we don’t like what we see. The question we might ask ourselves is what it will take for us to get to the point of saying yes. For some of us, it takes coming up against something we can’t ignore, escape, or deny, and so we are left no choice but to say yes. For others, it just seems a natural progression of events that leads us to making the decision to say yes to life.

The first step to saying yes is realizing that in the end it is so much easier than the alternative. Once we understand this, we can begin examining the moments when we resist what is happening, and experiment with occasionally saying yes instead. It might be scary at first, and even painful at times, but if we continue to say yes to every moment through the process, we will discover the joy of being in a positive conversation with a force much bigger than ourselves.
